About Tony

“Seduction and narrative are the conceptual underpinnings that connect his paintings together. Story, interior context, personal space and the representation of image are all present throughout the series. With these concepts in mind, Roko seeks to brings a unique vision of beauty to the gritty urban lifestyle.”

Tony has quickly emerged as one of the Motor City's most sought after artists. His work can be found at some of Detroit's premiere exhibitions and most influential galleries. Self taught, he made his own path into the art world through the unique use of automotive paints and industrial enamels. These methods have positioned Tony Roko as an innovative and vernacular visual artist. His medium and its application is a direct by-product of working within the Motor City and as such supports his ability to recreate the meaning and use of industrial materials that were once exclusive to the body of a car. This type of ‘re-use’ and re-positioning of materials and concepts is exactly what Detroit, and other post-industrial cities need to allow art and art communities to help shape future urban environments and current culture. Roko's work can be seen at the Motown Museum, and he has been commissioned by Ford Motor Company and Vitamin Water to create original pieces. His work can also be viewed in the permanent collection of the Michigan State Capital building and has been selected to show at the prestigious Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, with a solo show to be announced later this year.
